Athletics
St. Joseph’s Primary School Athletics Club aims to provide Primary 6 and 7 pupils with an opportunity to develop their personal health and fitness through a variety of short distance sprints, long distance runs and circuits type activities. Some pupils will be selected to representative the school in Sportshall, track, field and cross country events within South Lanarkshire Council.

The Athletics Club for 2017-2018 will run for P7 pupils from November to March and for P6 pupils from April to June. The Athletics Club will be held in St. Joseph’s Primary School on Thursdays from 3.10pm to 4pm.

Training can include use of local community facilities and areas. Pupils should wear old sports clothing suitable for training indoors and outdoors e.g. tracksuit trousers, t-shirt, trainers and waterproof jacket. All club members will be requested to change into their uniform for transit home and would benefit from bringing a plastic bag to contain their training clothes. Pupils are encouraged to bring a water bottle for hydration during training activities.

Big Band

St. Joseph’s Primary School Big Band provides opportunities for pupils to showcase their musical talents in a ‘Big Band’ setting. Primary 5 to 7 children learn to play a wide variety of woodwind and brass instruments through group music tuition. The ‘Big Band’ supports pupils to work as a team to recite a range of musical works. The ‘Big Band’ performs regularly for parents, carers, the community and a number of audiences. St. Joseph’s Big Band have been delighted to perform at the South Lanarkshire Council Music Festival in the Hamilton Townhouse in successive years. The children compete for Musician of The Year in June each year, a competition which is judged by eminent musicians and a representative of St. John Ogilvie Secondary School. The ‘Big Band’ rehearses on a Friday from 3.05 to 4.00pm.

Choir and Drama

The Choir and Drama group, which is for children from primaries 5, 6 and 7 meet every Wednesday between 3 and 4 pm. Great fun is had as the children learn songs and work towards the show which we put on in spring every year. This year we are working on a new show called ‘Dragon Days’; lots of laughter and silliness is the order of the day as we learn the catchy tunes and start working on the script. All are welcome to join in the fun.
